What’s The Shelf Life of CBD?

Every packaged product has a window of time where it’s most safe and effective to use. This is known as the product’s shelf life. CBD oil’s shelf life can be hard to pinpoint due to certain manufacturing variables, from the classification of the starting material to the carrier oil, to the final product’s packaging and storage method.

How to store CBD? As a general rule of thumb, it’s said that the average shelf life of CBD oil can span anywhere between 14 to 24 months, depending on how well it’s stored. After two years, the product is often liable to go rancid.

How Can You Tell If CBD Is No Longer Working

When CBD goes rancid, its cannabinoids and other compounds start to degrade over time. This process won’t make the CBD oil harmful or toxic, but it can impact its potency and the way it interacts with your system to alleviate your ailments.

Oftentimes, it’s quite obvious to tell when your CBD has become rancid. Depending on the product, you might be able to tell that it has lost its freshness through smell or appearance.

Sometimes, in liquid form, a CBD oil supplement will appear murkier and cloudier rather than clear. Additionally, the separation of the contents of the oil will visually dictate when the oil has spoiled. More often than not, however, rancidity is noticeable due to flavour; a rancid product will taste bad.

How to Store CBD Oil:

The ideal condition to store CBD oil is in an upright position in a place where it won’t come into contact with extreme elements such as heat, moisture, or light. A dry room temperature spot like a pantry is ideal. Aside from this, CBD oil can be refrigerated. Whilst there’s no requirement to do so, it is another viable option to store the product, with the only real drawback being that the oil can thicken when too cold. To remedy this, simply run the bottle under some hot water.

How to Store CBD Edibles:

To store edibles, store them as you would any other baked goods or candy; silicone containers work well, serving to minimize moisture build-up, whilst glass jars are equally as effective (considering the edible isn’t sticky) and can be stored in a room temperature storage area or a fridge. As for freezing your edibles, be mindful that excess air should be removed to prevent moisture if temperature changes occur. Make sure to defrost your edible slowly as sudden temperature drops can turn your product rancid. With that being said, your edible should keep in the freezer for around a year without spoiling.

How to Store CBD Concentrates:

The same suggestions apply to concentrates as it does edibles, but it’s also worth bearing in mind that silicone containers are a short-term storage solution, whilst airtight containers and parchment papers are perfect for storing wax and shatters in the long-term. As for tinctures, these can be stored in the fridge or in a cool, dark place in a sterilized glass dropper bottle. When airtight and sealed, these products can keep for over six months.

How to Store CBD e-juice

The best way to store CBD e-juice to vape, as with any e-liquid, is to store it in a cool, dark place. It’s important that the product is kept away from direct sunlight and other heat sources.

How to Store CBD Flower

CBD-rich flowers can be smoked to reap the healing benefits. To store it, it’s better to use a Mason jar rather than a plastic bag. This is because the latter can become damaged with ease, with small snags allowing air to enter into the bag, ruining the airtight storage you’ll want to opt for. Aside from this, plastic bags are actually quite rough on the flowers. Mason jars, on the other hand, won’t damage your flowers and, especially if using a coloured jar, will not expose them to air or UV light, which can degrade them.

How to Store CBD Topicals:

Likewise, to store topicals such as lotions and creams, you’ll need to make sure your product isn’t coming into direct contact with excessive heat, light, or moisture. A cool and dark place – perhaps a cabinet – is preferable.

How To Store CBD Explained

As can be seen in all of the various forms CBD can take, storage in a cool and dark place is key, whilst exposure to extreme elements will only serve to spoil your product. The general consensus is, however, that all of these products can be stored using containers you might have on-hand anyway and can keep for a good amount of time before spoiling.
