What is THC Syrup?
To start, we’ll tell you exactly what THC syrup isn’t. THC syrup is not to be confused with lean, also known as Purple Drank. Instead, it’s a concentrated form of THC in a liquid syrupy form.
It consists mainly of hash oil, vegetable glycerin, and sweeteners or flavour additives.
THC syrup can be likened to your typical cough syrups in terms of its texture, meaning it is thick and viscous. Since it is an ingestible form of cannabis, THC syrup and cannabis edibles share similarities in terms of their effects.
You can expect a strong, intense high with effects coming on between 30 minutes to 2 hours after consumption. However, the actual onset time is highly dependent on whether you have consumed food before ingesting the THC syrup as well as individual tolerance and physiology.
In addition to THC syrup, for those who are only after CBD-exclusive products, certain manufacturers produce CBD-syrups that follow a similar recipe to THC syrup, except without the THC, as the name implies.

How to Make THC Syrup
Making your own THC syrup isn’t all that hard. In fact, it’s relatively straightforward!
Most of the ingredients you’ll need can be found at your local grocery store, pharmacy, or even online.
That said, here’s all you need to know about making this tasty beverage at home:
- A cannabis concentrate of your choice
- Vegetable glycerine
- A saucepan
- Flavour additives like lemon extract or any other of your choosing (optional)
- To start, you’ll be creating a simple syrup by combining equal parts sugar and water in your saucepan. You can scale to the amount of syrup that you’d like to make, simply add more sugar and water, or just use less.
- Next, you’ll want to bring the simple syrup mixture to a boil on high heat. While it is heating up, make sure you continually stir the sugar and water together to mix thoroughly.
- Once the syrup gets boiling, lower the heat to medium and add your cannabis concentrate to the saucepan. Stir as you go along. This part of the process can take 45-60 minutes to complete.
- After about 30 minutes at medium heat, add your vegetable glycerin. The ratio is about 1:20 or two teaspoons per 3 cups of simple syrup. However, you may customize the recipe as you please. A little goes a long way here.
- After adding your vegetable glycerin, you can start adding your flavour additives to the mixture. Continue cooking for the remainder of the time.
- Let your THC syrup chill, and then pour it into a secure container and refrigerate.
THC Syrup vs Lean
As we said before, THC syrup and lean are not to be confused. Though they may share a similar texture and are both used medically as well as recreationally, they are not one and the same.
While THC syrup follows a similar cadence to many traditional cannabis edibles, lean is far more dangerous and could even lead to you ending up in the hospital or worse.
That’s not to say that you can’t go overboard with THC syrup as well. It can definitely be done and will most likely result in a profoundly uncomfortable experience known as greening out. However, the dangers are far less severe.
If you’ve familiarized yourself with the vernacular in the weed community, you’ll notice people referring to THC syrup as “THC lean” or something along those lines.
Though it can be fun to use those terms with friends or other people in the cannabis community, we repeat that the two are not the same thing.
That said, while lean is inherently more dangerous than THC syrup, that does not rule out the potential of overuse and the possibility of side effects associated with THC syrup. As a cannabis concentrate, it should be treated with caution and care.
It should be consumed responsibly and should not be mixed with alcohol. Heavy machinery or vehicles also should not be operated while under its influence.
