what is bubble hash

Cannabis concentrates like bubble hash have been making their way onto the main stage of the cannabis industry in recent years. While it may not be thousands of years in the making like the original cannabis hash, concentrated forms of weed like bubble hash have covered considerable ground in a relatively short period of time.

For the tokers out there who enjoy something with a more powerful kick than standard weed flower, bubble hash is one of the top performers.

Recently, the cannabis concentrate has risen to popularity and has become a community favourite among novice and experienced tokers alike within the broader cannabis community.

So, what is bubble hash and what makes this type of cannabis concentrate so good compared to the others?

To help you learn a bit more, today, we’re covering the key traits of bubble hash, its effects and how to make it, so you can gauge whether it is something you would like to try.

Without any further delay, let’s jump right in!

What is Bubble Hash?

Bubble hash is among the most potent types of hash made through a mechanical extraction process. In other words, this means that producers don’t utilize solvents during the creation process.

In particular, it uses an extraction process involving bubble bags. This element is where the cannabis concentrate gets its unique name.

Compared to the more traditional hash, bubble hash clocks in at about 20% stronger, offering hash enthusiasts a more powerful solvent-free variant.

Like all other types of cannabis concentrates, bubble hash is created by extracting the cannabinoid and terpene-rich trichomes from the cannabis plant. That said, although bubble hash may not have the sheer stopping power of the highly pure forms of concentrate like THC distillate, it makes up for it by also providing a balanced terpene profile.

If you’re not familiar with terpenes, these tiny molecules are what give cannabis and other plants their distinct aromas. Still, it isn’t just the sense of smell that terpenes influence.

These highly volatile compounds also contribute to the psychoactive high itself in a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. In fact, there are variants of terpenes like limonene and linalool that are believed to provide immunostimulant and sedative effects respectively.

Though countless other terpenes can shape your high, each strain of weed has a different unique compound cocktail that yields a various set of effects.

Like traditional forms of handmade or artisanal hash, users can also make bubble hash from the comfort of their own home if they have the right equipment and ingredients.

What’s the Difference Between Hash & Bubble Hash?

hash vs bubble hash

Before delving into the process of making your own bubble hash, there are some distinct differences between it and traditional hash that are worth mentioning.

As previously mentioned, bubble hash is a slightly more potent and more refined variant of traditional forms of hash. Both regular and bubble hash are excellent options for smoking, but bubble hash will give you a slightly more powerful experience.

Bubble hash is also made using ice water and bubble bags, whereas traditional hash is usually made by producers rubbing their hands together with some fresh bud between their palms.

While the two types of extraction processes result in closely related products, bubble hash is made utilizing cold temperatures to cause the trichomes to become brittle.

On the other hand, traditional hand-made hash uses heat to temporarily melt the resin from the buds so that producers can extract them.

How to Make Bubble Hash

how to make bubble hash

If you’re stuck at home with a bunch of weed, there’s some good news for you! Bubble hash is actually quite easy to make at home but will require a fair bit of labour to make it successfully.

If you’re up for the challenge and are interested in making bubble hash at home, follow the recipe below.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bubble bags (3-4 in different sized weaves, the finer the weave, the finer your bubble hash will be)
  • 10-15 lbs of ice
  • 5 gallons of purified ice water
  • Large sticks for stirring
  • 3-4 ounces of fresh, high-quality weed (your strain of choice)
  • A 5-gallon bucket
  • Cheesecloth

Helpful Tips Before Starting:

  • It’s best to use the highest quality weed available. For bubble hash, your starting ingredients’ quality will significantly impact how well your hash turns out. The higher the quality of your weed, the higher the quality of your bubble hash.
  • Get your cannabis as cold as possible. The colder the weed is, the more brittle the trichomes will be, and in turn, the easier it will be for them to break off from the rest of the bud, shortening your mixing time.
  • Use either distilled or purified water. The reason being is that these types of water do not contain any amounts of extra chemicals like chlorine or fluoride. These chemicals can interfere with the extraction process and don’t typically mix well with the trichomes.

Directions:

1) Line the Bucket

Line your 5-gallon bucket with your bubble bags, starting with your smallest weave bubble bag and ending with your largest weave bubble bag.

It’s common to use about 3-4 bubble bags for the entire process. The more you use, the more different qualities of hash you’ll produce.

2) Fill the Bucket

With your bucket fully lined, pour your cannabis into it and add about half of your ice in.

Begin pouring your ice-cold water into the bucket so that the weed gets fully submerged.

3) Agitate the Mixture

With your weed mixed with your ice and water, it’s now time to agitate the mixture.

Grab your stirring sticks and begin mixing everything in the bucket for about 15 to 20 minutes. After mixing, let the cannabis and water settle for another 30 minutes.

4) Scrape Off the Hash

Remove the first layer of your bubble bags (the one closest to you) and then scrape the hash at the bottom of the bag onto a container or flat surface.

At this point, it’s essential to keep each batch of hash from each bubble bag separate as they will all have different consistencies.

Repeat this until all the hash has been removed from each bubble bag. Once finished, drain the ice water from your bucket.

5) Dry the Hash

Now, it’s time to dry out your hash.

It will undoubtedly be wet at this point, so grab some cheesecloth and press it against each batch of bubble hash on a flat surface.

This will remove much of the moisture and speed up the drying process.

6) Store Your Hash

Congratulations, you now have some homemade bubble hash.

It won’t last forever, so storing it in a sealed container in a dark and dry location is essential. You could even refrigerate it to extend its shelf life.
