Why Does Weed Smell So Strongly?

First things first, we need to discuss why it has such a strong smell in the first place. This background knowledge will help us better understand how best to tackle it!

While different weed strains will have slightly different notes, they share the same general aroma. This odour comes from the aromatic oils produced by the cannabis plant called terpenes.

Terpenes are common to all plants and play roles such as attracting or detracting insects. They also have therapeutic effects on humans and animals. The number of terpenes a plant produces will vary by species.

In this way, some plants will have strong, potent odours, while others will be more subtle.

Cannabis comes from a species of plants that have adapted to its environment by producing large quantities of terpenes to both deter pests and parasites and attract pollinators.

These plants also produce a wide assortment of over 100 terpenes that interact with other components in cannabis and the endocannabinoid system to create various effects.

Some of the most prevalent terpenes in cannabis include myrcene, limonene, linalool, alpha-pinene, and nerolidol which are more pronounced during smoking.

How to Get Rid of the Smell of Weed

We all know that dank weed has a strong and skunky smell, especially if the method of consumption chosen is smoking. So, how do we make it go away?

It’s easier than you think, and chances are you already have most of the things you’ll need to get rid of the smell.

Here are 5 ways for how to get rid of the smell of weed:

Air it Out

The easiest and most natural way to get rid of weed smell is by allowing the terpenes to evaporate into the air. In other words, you just need to expose it to some fresh air by increasing ventilation or cracking open a window.

If you’re smoking inside, open all the windows and doors to increase ventilation in your home.

You can also use a fan to speed up air circulation throughout the room. Though this requires less effort, it takes a few hours for the smell to go away completely.

If you’re smoking in a car, park it with the windows down in your driveway, or roll down your windows as you drive (when you’re not high, of course).

This technique should remove most of the smoke, and if needed, you may also need to deodorize your seats to remove any lingering smells.

Mask the Smell with Scented Products

If you notice that the weed odour is still lingering in your home and you have guests coming over soon or particularly judgy roommates or neighbours, you can attempt to mask the weed smell with something that has a stronger scent.

How about lighting some incense? Incense has a notoriously strong smell that makes a perfect cover if you need to hide the weed scent fast. If you don’t have incense, lighting some scented candles will also do the trick.

Just make sure you remember to blow them out!

You may even try using air fresheners that eliminate the weed smell from the air rather than cover it up. Use a spray if you are strapped for time.

If you’re worried about the smell of weed sticking to your hair or clothes, always have some perfume or body spray on hand for seshes outside the home.

Take a Shower

Even if you don’t smoke weed inside, the smell of the smoke can still cling to you, especially if you blow your smoke against the direction of the wind.

Like we said above, weed smell can cling to your clothing, skin, and your hair. Before you know it, your entire body will smell like weed.

The best way to get rid of the weed smell is to take a shower. Toss your smelly clothing in the wash, and add dryer sheets afterward to regain freshness. Don’t forget to wash your hair as well. When you’re all clean, put on some fresh clothes.

Voila! It’s like your smoke sesh never happened.

Store Your Weed Properly

If you don’t store your weed properly, the terpenes will evaporate quickly into the air, and the smell will linger. The best way to store weed is in an airtight container like a mason jar to prevent the scent from escaping.

There are tons of different container options in stores and online explicitly designed for keeping weed fresh.

Of course, some odour will escape when you open the container, but a quick air freshener spray should eliminate the scent.

If you prefer to smoke cannabis indoors but can’t do it by a window or on a balcony, blow the smoke directly into a sploof.

A sploof is a smoking device designed to filter the smoke and prevent the weed smell from escaping the room.

If you like DIY projects, you can make a sploof yourself with some dryer sheets, a paper towel or toilet paper roll, and a rubber band. All you have to do is stuff a few dryer sheets into the roll, then cover one end with a single sheet.

Secure it in place with your elastic band, then exhale the smoke into the uncovered end.

There you have it, a smoke filter!
