How To Clean A Bong and Glass Pipe
Weed can be sticky business, literally and figuratively. We’ve all been there before; 3 months in to your prized new double-bubbler ice bong with the 8 piece percolator, once so shiny and clear – now starting to show the grubby signs of use. This is inevitable. You’re smoking a resinous substance and pulling it through glass walls – stuff is going to get pretty dirty, its just a fact. While very little can be done by the way of prevention, PLENTY can be done by the way of cure! This is why it’s important to know how to clean a bong and how to clean a pipe.
Today we’re going to break down some of the most popular methods to clean your bong or pipe, specifically how to clean glass pipe varieties (which are my personal favorite), and hopefully you and that prized piece of glass glory will be hooting with the best of them in no time.
Gather round stoners and stonettes, its time to get cleaning.
Things You’ll Need:
Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) – This is an excellent substance to clean resin off the glass of your bong
Salt – This is coarse and abrasive and will help scrape the resin from the glass
Pipe cleaners so you can get into the stem and other hard to clean places
Some glove. Rubbing alcohol can be pretty rough on your hands.
Now you’ve got your utensils, let’s learn how to clean a bong and how to clean a pipe!
Cleaning Your Bong
First things first, you’re going to want to take your bong apart. Remove the bowl, down stem and any other moving parts which need to be cleaned individually.
Next, throw salt into your bong and pour the rubbing alcohol into it. Shake vigorously for a few minutes, changing the solution as needed, depending on how dirty the bong is. Don’t hesitate to throw some extra elbow grease in there, as some good, resin filled kush will leave your bong really gross!
Pipe cleaners soaked in rubbing alcohol can then be used to reach the more tricky places, such as inside the bowl or the farther reaches of the down stem. This is probably the best way to clean a bong.
For how to clean a glass pipe, you’re going to want to use a similar methodology. Because their smaller, and have holes on both ends, I would recommend using cotton balls to plug up either side so you can shake around your salt and rubbing alcohol solution more effectively, without it spilling out of either end. For pipes you’re really going to want to make use of the pipe cleaners (the trick is in the name…) to most effectively scoop out the old resiny gunk.
Health Factors of Cleaning a Bong and Pipe
It is thought that bacteria become present in used bong water roughly 22 hours after sitting in your bong. Gross!! That does not sound too healthy or tasty to smoke out of. In fact, we breathe in content from the water, so it gives bacteria a direct line to your lungs, potentially increasing the risk of infection. Chemicals in the water are also present, sitting in your bong as it turns a dark, sewage colour with age and use.
There are plenty of “bong cleaning solutions” available on the market, many of which are just as effective as the salt and alcohol combination. However, there are so many of these products out there I cannot review all of them in this article, and some of them may not be very effective. I recommend sticking the “Do It Yourself” method, which has been tried and true by yours truly, and plenty of other people who can attest to its effectiveness.
